In 1998 we started The Crossing on a beautiful piece of land backing onto National Park beside the Bermagui River. We arrived in an old Bedford Bus, with the vision and passion to create something special.
We had a youth camp in mind, a purposeful place to involve young people in sustainable design and landcare leadership. We also imagined a learning journey for young people, traveling from the Sea to the Snow.
We wanted to make a difference in a small community and we wanted to inspire young people to create and lead sustainability action. At the time climate change was not in full focus and not many Australian houses had solar panels.
It’s been a great journey so far. Over nearly 20 years, The Crossing has evolved with the help of thousands of volunteers. We now have innovative buildings and gardens, solar power and hot water systems, a conservation agreement on the land, and 16,000 new trees along the river.
The Crossing currently runs approximately 20 weeks of programs a year, with more groups to come. We work with schools locally and from Canberra, Blue Mountains and Melbourne, as well as international university students. We also host adult education programs focused on action for sustainability.
We want to invite new people into this life of purpose and passion, to take the lead in running programs and growing The Crossing. This will bring in new energy and ideas and allow us to step into a support role as The Crossing continues to evolve into the future.
We are looking for two outdoor educators with passion, energy and relevant qualifications to become Program Leaders at The Crossing. Your interests could include landcare and habitat restoration, permaculture design, gardening, whole foods cooking, and expeditions that become journeys (you will know what we mean). Importantly, you would like and be able to relate well with young people, and love to encourage them to help and contribute.
The Crossing can offer a rustic house in a beautiful location, a wonderful community, long days and nights, lots of sharing and storytelling, digging, splitting, hiking, canoeing and mountain biking, and a flexible work arrangement which can be shared by two people.
Join us to help grow The Crossing and inspire many more young people to put sustainability into action.
It’s a wonderful life
